Individuals, Couples, & Families

We all face personal, family, and relationship problems at one time or another. Sometimes, we can resolve them with the help of our loved ones, but at other times, we require outside support.

We provide a safe space for exploring and resolving personal challenges. A skilled therapist guides the process and tailors it to the unique needs of the individual.

Relationship counselling is a form of therapy that aims to address the specific needs and concerns of the couple. It focuses on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and strengthening the relationship.

Family counselling is a broader approach that can involve any number of individuals in a family, including parents, children, grandparents, co-parents, and others. The goal of family counselling is to improve relationships and communication within the family unit, and it can range from working with just one parent and one child to an entire household.

Family Mediation

Family mediation is a process that can assist couples and families in resolving disputes, particularly those related to separation or divorce. It can be helpful in settling conflicts that arise before, during, or after separation and is completely confidential and voluntary.

The primary goal of family mediation is to reach a level of cooperation where agreements reached between the parties involved are more likely to last long-term. During the mediation process, the mediator may suggest solutions to a problem that you may not have considered previously. The mediator will always try to assess the feasibility of the proposed solutions, assisting you in reaching acceptable and workable solutions. It is important to note that the decisions and solutions arrived at during mediation are entirely yours. Mediators cannot dictate or advise any party on what to do.

Domestic & Family Violence

Domestic violence is a multifaceted social problem that has profound social, psychological, and economic consequences for individuals, families, and communities. It can manifest in various forms, such as physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, social, economic, and spiritual abuse. Domestic and family violence occurs in all races, ages, and sexes. Domestic violence extends across all cultural, socioeconomic, educational, religious, and geographic boundaries.

In many cases, victims may not realise they are living in an abusive relationship. Perpetrators of domestic violence tend to justify, minimise, or blame their partners for the violence. It's crucial to recognise that the perpetrator is always responsible for their abusive behaviour.

Domestic violence counselling is a highly specialised and complex field of counselling. Our top priority is to ensure the safety of everyone involved. We provide specialised counselling services to individuals, couples and families affected by domestic violence.

Personality Disorders

People with personality disorders often struggle at times to understand their internal experiences and tolerate stress. Personality disorders affect how people see themselves and others and how they act and react to the world. These patterns of thoughts and behaviours can have a significant impact on a person’s daily functioning, causing significant distress for the person.

Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy (MIT) is an integrated treatment that aims to improve self-awareness, improve interpersonal relationships, and enhance overall functioning. MIT is collaborative, with therapists working closely with clients to develop understanding and strategies that support recovery and personal growth.

Promoting Recovery From Severe Mental Illness.

Severe mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and schizophrenia can cause significant impairment in a person’s capacity to function in the world. These conditions can last for a short while or can be lifelong. In either case, severe mental illness can cause distress, affecting a person’s thoughts, moods, and behaviours. It can impact every aspect of a person’s life.

Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT) is an integrative psychotherapy that seeks to assist adults diagnosed with severe mental illness to make sense and meaning of the challenges and possibilities in their lives and to find ways to manage these and direct their own recovery.

Trauma Recovery

Traumatic experiences can have a lasting impact on one's life, whether it's a single life-threatening event or recurring trauma. The negative effects can persist long after the threat has passed.

At Misso Psychology, we offer evidence-informed therapy for those seeking help with trauma-related issues such as addiction, abuse, depression, PTSD, and other challenges that have deleterious effects on one’s sense of self.

Trauma therapy supports people affected by traumatic events by helping them reconnect with the world and restore a sense of safety. Symptoms of trauma can manifest physically, emotionally, and psychologically. These symptoms can vary greatly from person to person, which is why a personalised treatment approach is crucial in bridging the connection between trauma and recovery.
